The evolution of what we might call grid-based board games has had many twists and turns along the way, from the Gupta Empire of classical India to chess, checkers, reversi and other games we now find familiar. The Japanese game of Shogi, with one of the most exotic twists in this long and fascinating evolution, has reached the United States and may be about to enjoy a resurgence.
